Shellac bangles are also called ruli and are made from lac dust, the waste left over, has a flat surface and has the largest demand. It has a ritualistic significance and is usually a sign of marriage. It is said that to wear shellac bangles was always considered auspicious for the women. By folk tradition it is considered necessary for a married women to wear shellac bangles for bringing good luck to herself and the family.
Styles:
Shellac is the resinous substance, which a female lac insect produces, in a translucent reddish fluid when it is embedded in a kind of cylinder of pipal, bel or bar tree twigs to lay its eggs. The shellac bangles are used by all classes of people and the varieties seem endless in design and coloring. Brightly colored shellac bangles are an inexpensive buy that came in a dazzling variety, often studded with glass gems, spirals of base-metal wire amid a wavy striping of other colors.

Shellac bangles are manufactured throughout India but some of the famous manufacturing centres include Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar and West Bengal.
